Pat Bonner - The Last Line Book
Patrick Joseph ‘Packie’ Bonner is without doubt a Celtic legend. Still their most capped player, with the likes of Tommy Burns, Danny McGrain, Paul McStay, Charlie Nicholas and Roy Aitken he gathered trophies, titles and adulation throughout his 641 appearances. He was also Jack Charlton’s first-choice goalkeeper during a golden era for the Republic of Ireland squad.
Now, in his own words, Packie recounts his amazing journey from the day legendary Celtic manager Jock Stein came to County Donegal to make him his last signing, to his role in some of football’s greatest games from Glasgow to Genoa. Alongside such legends as Paul McGrath, Mick McCarthy, Roy Keane and Ray Houghton, Packie helped kindle an Irish love affair with football that included such highlights as defeating England at the European Championships in 1988, to beating Italy in World Cup USA ’94 and, of course, that penalty shootout against Romania at Italia ’90.
The Last Line is just that – the final word on a huge career at the game’s pinnacle and an intimate, personal account of how these events have shaped the man known to millions simply as ‘Packie’.
